English Composition II Blog
How do fan fiction and other texts such as our our re-genre project challenge notions of authorship and ownership of ideas?
In this day and age, there are many copyright and plagiarism laws. Authors who come up with "original" story ideas will sue anyone who looks as if they might be stealing their idea. Fan fictions, such as the ones my English Composition II class wrote challenge the sense of ownership that authors have with their ideas. The question here is, can someone own an idea? Lets take an idea for a book. Books are made up of letters which in turn make up words. Can someone say they own the alphabet? No idea is truly original because it is guaranteed that someone came up with the idea before.
