Summary: In Man in the High Castle's eighth episode, End of the World, there are again several secrets revealed about the main characters. The largest one centers around the Obergruppenfuher. The episode begins with Lemuel Washington. He is with a boy teaching him how to fish when he receives a message from the man in the high castle. He wants the new film delivered to him. Back in the west Ed warns Frank that the Japanese police are looking for him. He urges him to leave town as soon as possible. Frank says that he is leaving that night. Joe meets up with Juliana and tells her that he needs her help to locate the new film. Juliana goes to see Karen who is a large member of the resistance. Karen went to pick up the tape only to realize it had been stolen. They need to pay a large sum of money to get it back. While all of this is happening Obergruppenfuher Smith discovers his son has a terminal disease that will cause paralysis in a very short time. He is told there is no treatment and is given a medication that will kill his son instantly. Joe and Juliana finally get the film but as they are about to run away from where they got it, they are captured by an unknown group of people.
Re-genre: To whom it may concern, A tremor. My son had a tremor, and this idiot doctor presumes to tell me that he is terminally ill. No, I'm not accepting that, no, absolutely not. I wanted a second opinion, but he decided to give me some crack pot excuse as to why that is not a good idea. The only reason that idiotic doctor is alive right now is because I have not yet decided to kill him. They're making a mistake, I know they are. this whole matter is absolutely ridiculous.

Summary: In Man in the High Castle's seventh episode, The Truth many interesting facts and stories are revealed about some of the main character's lives. The episode begins by addressing the enormous cliff-hanger from the last episode. Joe had just spent VA day at the Obergruppenfuher Smith's house. He was invited to stay the night and graciously accepted. While everyone had gone to bed Joe crept into Smith's office to take a look at the "Grasshopper" file. He finds it completely empty to his dismay and just at that moment Smith catches Joe snooping in his office. Smith is eerily calm about the whole matter and expresses his disappointment in Joe. He confesses that he knew Joe had been lying to him since he returned from Canon City but that he had wanted to find out how much he had been lying about. Smith takes out the picture Frank had drawn of Juliana and tells Joe that he needs to tell him what he knows and how much he knows about this girl. Joe tells Smith that he was protecting Juliana to make sure no one discovered him and that he had feelings for her. He certainly did not tell the whole truth but Smith seemed satisfied for the time. Smith tells Joe that they are looking for a new film that is apparently different from the last one. He also tells Joe that he is going to use his relationship with Juliana to get the film. If he messes up even a little bit, both of them are dead. Back in the west, Frank finally comes out and tells Juliana of his plan to assassinate the Japanese prince. He also explains about why he couldn't go through with it, talking about the Japanese boy he had seen. Juliana also confesses that she saw her stepfather Arnold at her Japanese workplace, tapping phones. As the episode progresses, Juliana goes to visit her mother who says she has a feeling Trudy is alive. Later as Juliana is out and about she sees Trudy alive and well, even though she had seen her shot in the street. Trudy runs away and disappears before Juliana can catch her. Meanwhile Joe heads back to his apartment where it is revealed that he has a girlfriend with a son. The son is plainly not his own. He doesn't tell his girlfriend where had been for the last couple days, most likely to protect her. While all of this is happening, the antique shop owner, Robert, who had sold Frank the bullets, is invited to have dinner with the Japanese prince and princess. Robert has dinner with the two and pretends to be astounded at the American antique collection they possess. Later it is revealed that one of the guns the prince has is clearly a fake even though he didn't realize it. When dinner is over, Robert learns that the only reason he had been invited was so that they could learn more about the American culture. Angered, he makes a deal with Frank to create fake antiques and sell them as the real products. By the end of the episode the viewers learn a lot about Trade Minister Tagomi. It is revealed that he used to have a wife who died. Tagomi is searching into Juliana's past and tells her that Trudy is dead. He tells her where her body is and the episode ends with Juliana visiting the mass grave in which Trudy's body was thrown.
Re-genre: Joe Blake 111 Kirchgasse Pl Greater Nazi Reich 14 May 1962 Dear Juliana, I pulled in a favor to send you this letter. The Obergruppenfuher has been asking questions, too many questions. I told him that yo had a film, that a man tried to kill you, you put up a fight, and he went off the bridge. I also told him that I helped hide the body. That's all there is. I did not tell him anything else. I wouldn't do that to you of all people. I have just one job to do with the Nazis and then this will all be over. Now that I'm back here, did you hear anything about this new film? I haven't heard much, just that it is very different from the other one. In what way I am not entirely sure. Do you think you can somehow get to it on your own? That's all it is. Just do this one thing, this one job for me, and all of this will be over. Please just do this one thing for me. Let me know, Juliana. Regards, Joe Summary: The sixth episode in the Man in the High Castle takes place on VA day. VA day is a holiday only celebrated by the Germans. On this day they are celebrating their "liberation" of the former United States of America. Oddly enough, the Japanese do not take any part or celebrate this holiday. Juliana, even though she ran out on the offer of a job (rightly so) is offered a different job from Trade Minister Tagomi. Her job is basically to be a coffee girl. She is told to keep her mouth shut and her head down. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about what happened to Trudy, and why she was killed. Meanwhile the Japanese are searching for who might have attempted to kill the crown prince. They are led to the antique gun shop that Frank purchased bullets from. The man denies selling them to someone who was not Japanese. At Frank's work, Japanese detectives arrive to get more information about him from his boss. At this point Joe is at Obergruppenfuherer Smith's house celebrating VA day. They go to the airport to pick up his wife's mother only to realize her flight is canceled. They run into Rudolph Wegener who is also known as Barnes. It turns out that Barnes and Smith used to work together during the war. They also invite him over to celebrate VA day. Joe eventually finds out that the reason Barnes was invited over was because Smith suspected that he was up to something. Barnes had checked into the airport under a false name. Smith asks Joe on his advice as to what he should do with Barnes. Joe convinces him to arrest him. After that, Joe searches through Smith's things, looking for the Grasshopper information. He finds it, only to realize that it is blank. Smith finds him searching through all of his things. Juliana and Frank argue about how their life has been lately. Juliana confesses that she killed a man in Canon City and Frank becomes unbelievably angry when Juliana said a man helped her. Back at her place of work Juliana finds a room labeled Sakura, which was clue someone had given her. She finds a room in which people are tapping phones and listening to other people's conversations. She manages to get out before anyone discovers that she was not supposed to be in there.
Re-genre: Regret "You will not speak of anything you hear or see. Understand?" "Yes sir, of course sir." I kept my head straight, eyes forced forwards. Don't make eye contact....don't make eye contact. After months of training, I had finally gotten my first position. I hadn't exactly wanted to work at a concentration camp, but you got what you got. I wasn't going to complain. At least I wasn't in the concentration camp. "Why are you here, John Smith?" "To make my country proud sir." my best friend Rudolph Wegener was beside me. We had thankfully gotten assigned to the same camp. "...to make your country proud, yes. Well you can start that by helping our new world get rid of this filth." He nodded in the direction of the Jewish prisoners. "They're to be exterminated. Get them ready." I saluted. "Yes sir. Heil Hitler." He saluted back. "Heil Hitler." Wegener and I trotted over to the prisoners. They were sad looking things, barefoot, and clad in dirty clothing that was all just different shades of gray. "Alright everyone, follow me!" As I walked ahead to lead them to the showers, Wegener fell in behind them. We had only walked for about thirty seconds when I fell flat on my face. The wind whooshed out of me, and suddenly I couldn't breathe. I struggled to see what had landed on me. A jew! A jew was attacking me! I turned around, punching him in the face as hard as I could. He persisted, trying to tear my eyes out. Where was Wegener? Why was I the one being attacked? I sat up with a gasp. "What? What is it honey?" my wife asked. Her hair was tousled and her eyes were sleepy. "Nothing, nothing." I murmured. "Just a nightmare, that's all. We all get them from time to time." "Was it about the war?" "No!" I snapped. "Why would it be about the war? Go back to sleep." I rolled over, eyes staring blindly into the darkness, trying to forget, failing. Summary: Episode 5 of the Man in the High Castle was titled "The New Normal." This episode picks up directly where the last one left off. The Japanese prince was just shot, although not by Frank. The bullet surprisingly came from some unknown position. At this point everything and everyone is flying around in utter panic and chaos. Frank intelligently leaves the scene even though he technically did not commit a crime there. In the process of him running away he drops Juliana's heart necklace by accident, not even realizing as it fell to the ground. Juliana meanwhile has finally arrived home. She is glad to see Frank but Frank isn't as excited to see her. Juliana goes to visit her family where she learns that Frank's sister, niece, and nephew were killed. She is rather surprised because this is the first time she is hearing this. She finally realizes how her leaving randomly for Canon City had affected the people she loves. The next day as Frank is leaving for work he informs her that he believes that nothing between them will ever go back to normal. Juliana stops by her akikido dojo to train only to realize that she is not welcome there anymore. Joe is back with the Nazis at this point. He had to go through some rather tough questioning on what happened during his mission, most of which he lied about. Obergruppenfuher Smith invites him over the next day to celebrate VA day. Juliana explores Randall's old house to look for clues. She meets another woman there who claims that she is with the Resistance. This woman believes that Trudy was set up by someone in the Japanese government. She suggests that Juliana find a job working for the government so she can find a way to fight back against their regime and maybe gain some insight into what happened to Trudy. Juliana interviews for a job at the Japanese authority building. The only way that they would grant her a job would be if she performed sexual favors for her boss. She smartly runs out of their and bumps into Trade Minister Tagomi who, she finds, has her necklace.
Re-genre: Episode 1: The Man In The High Castle Found Poem False Pride My country It's so beautiful Across our land the sun rises It's a new day in our proud land We are stronger, prouder, better That's what they told us But our greatest days, they lie. Destiny is in the hands of men You must be proud to be such a Loyal subject You don't need to be anymore What did curiosity do to the cat? You're scared aren't you? You're afraid to die. I used to be They killed my father, My friends are dead Point and shoot they said. Point and shoot Do as you're told Torture men. I'm telling the truth. They dropped the bomb. But look they said they were degenerate they did not fit the measure of a great civilization seek peace only your ego is bruised Heil Hitler. Episode 2: Sunrise Conformity That man is a social deviant. Preposterous, isn't it? Nonconformist and proud of it. That is the path of moral decay. It is not your place to ask questions, breathe free, or break the chains. You people ruined this country. Why do you think we should dedicate our lives to what's beyond the sun? Not all life under the sun is futile. Satisfy yourself with following orders. You will make our nation stronger. You will grow to be a useful member of society, understand? Even if you kill me someone you love dies when you refuse to obey. You don't want freedom. It takes a lot of effort to be free. This ends when you let them take your soul. Episode 3: The Illustrated Woman Violence The pawns put some of my family's blood on the streets. They killed them just last night. Why didn't they kill you? Tell me, or I'll kill you. How would you describe it? "The Resistance is worth dying for." That's a lie. Many threats have exposed themselves. Hold everything back. You should be careful. You live longer that way. Maybe the world can change, I couldn't say. No reason to kill you now. Episode 4: Revelations Futility Men are mortal and imperfect. Promise me you'll give up, even if it costs you your life. Peace is not weakness. You kill your heart, and I promise you'll see the world as they wish. There is a point in hiding. Put a bullet through the looking glass. Episode 5: The New Normal Hope Looking beyond right now, I wouldn't say there's nothing left. This is between death and life. Our free spirit was incinerated. You've got to find a how. That is the only way to fight. To live. Jillian DiLucido
Eng 112, MW 3:35-5:00 Informal Assignment # 6 Due February 13 at 3 PM Writing About Episode #4: Revelations Summary: Episode four of the Man in the High Castle is aptly named Revelations. The episode picks up exactly where the last one left off. Juliana and Joe are being chased by the marshal after he realizes that Juliana is the woman he is looking for. Juliana with some help from Joe eventually escapes from the marshal and the pair goes off in search of Lemmel Washington, Juliana's boss. The two suspect that he is the contact that Juliana was supposed to meet. They meet up with Washington and he asks for the film right away. Juliana refuses saying that she wants to meet the person that Washington was going to give the film to. He seems reluctant at first but eventually agrees. Later that night Joe calls the Obergruppenführer and tells him that he is going to meet the man in the high castle. Obergruppenführer tells Joe to assassinate him even if it costs him his life in the end. The next day, Washington takes Juliana and Joe into a forest and wrestles the film away from them at gunpoint. He doesn't want either of them to meet the man in the high castle because he rightly suspects that Joe is a Nazi. Washington leaves with the film and suggests that Juliana and Joe do not go back to Canon City because the marshal would surely kill them. Meanwhile Frank had completed building his gun and illegally bought bullets at an antique store. His best friend and coworker Ed eventually figures out that Frank wants to kill the Japanese prince and princess. He freaks out, but Frank tells him that he isn't going to actually do anything about it. Juliana and Joe head back to Canon city even though they know they should leave. The marshal ends up chasing Juliana again but she escapes by faking her own death. She calls home expecting to talk to Frank but ends up talking to Ed. Ed tells her how Frank is planning to essentially end his own life and that she needs to get there as soon as possible. She hops on a bus for San Fransisco, leaving Joe behind. At the Japanese prince's speech Joe is about to pull the trigger when he sees a small Japanese boy watching him. He puts the gun away but an unknown assassin shoots the prince. Analysis:

ENG 112 MW 3:35-5:00 Informal Assignment # 3 Due: February 13 at 3 PM. Writing About the Illustrated Woman Summary: The third episode of the Man in the High Castle was called the Illustrated Woman. This episode compared to the first two was relatively calm. In the episode before, Juliana had just thrown the "origami man" over the bridge when he attempted to murder her. She is obviously in shock and disbelief at what she has done so when her and Joe finally get back to their hotel, he attempts to comfort her. He confesses that he killed someone once too and that all you can really do about it is just "deal with it." Not exactly a comforting thought as she seems extremely distraught at what she had done. With the attempted murder on his mind Joe tells Juliana that he read the letter she had asked him to send to her mother. Joe now knows Juliana's real name and he knows why she was in Canon city. He asks her to leave Canon City with him as soon as possible and says that she may not even have a contact to meet. The main reason he wanted to leave Canon City was because he knew that someone would eventually come searching for the origami man, and Joe did not want himself or Juliana there when that happened. He tells her this and Juliana eventually agrees to leave with him the next day. As they are about to leave we are introduced to a man known as "The Marshal." A creepy looking fellow, he is skulking around Canon City searching for the origami man. This is Juliana and Joe's worst nightmare because the marshal carries around a shotgun and he fancies himself as a sort of bounty hunter. The marshal inspects the bridge where the origami man was pushed over and finds the picture that Frank had drawn of Juliana. The marshal, without realizing it now has a clue to lead him to a prime suspect of the case. He goes around town asking people if they had seen that woman and he eventually stops into the store in which Juliana had bought a bible. The bible seller tells the marshal that he was selling bibles, which is illegal in other areas. It comes about that the bible sellers name is David Frees and he is a wanted man. The marshal ironically captures David Frees and kills him, hanging him where everyone in Canon City can see. While Juliana is dealing with her killing someone else, Frank is dealing with the death of his family. Not very well in fact. He is having an extremely hard time functioning after his late sister's husband blames him for her death. He eventually forces himself to get back to work. But this time he decides to make an actual real gun. He plans to use it on either the Japanese prince or princess in order to hit the Japanese where it hurts. Meanwhile Juliana and Joe find the origami man's body and discover a map that leads them to Copper Gulch mine. At the mine they find a paper with Juliana's sisters name on it and a man named Lemmel Washington. Washington is Juliana's boss at the diner she works at. There is now some hope that Washington might be the contact they are searching for. As they drive to go back and find Washington, the marshal finds them and shoots at Joe's truck attempting to kill them. The episode ends on a cliff-hanger. Analysis:
www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/01/trump-immigration-refugee-vetting-consequences-executive-order-214702 The Man in the High Castle's first episode introduced an entirely different world than the one we are used to. In this world, Japan and Germany won WWII and the old United States of America is under their control. Joe Blake is a man in New York who is looking for a job to "get his country back." In the beginning of the episode, we are not sure what this particular job is. He seemingly wants to work for a resistance group that is against the rein of the Nazis and the Japs. He meets with a Mr. Warren who sets him up with a job to deliver "coffee makers" into the neutral zone, Canon City. Mr. Warren says that Joe is simply delivering coffee makers but Joe believes that he is delivering something that can help overthrow the corrupt government. Meanwhile in San Fransisco we are introduced to Juliana who is training in the Japanese martial art of Akikdo. She lives with her boyfriend Frank relatively peacefully until one day she runs into her estranged sister Trudy. Her sister gives her a film that shows America winning World War II along with a train ticket to Canon City. Juliana runs away and decides to go to Canon City, much to her boyfriends dismay when he finds out where she has gone.
A large portion of this show deals with censorship. The government in the new "Pacific States" is extremely controlling and the media is constantly controlled. The films that Juliana and Joe possess are a form of digital media that the government wants to get their hands on. They want to get their hands on it because it shows something that they do not agree with, therefore it could be a threat to them. Donald Trump, as president of the United States of America is basically doing the same thing. Trump's first war as he called it was against the media. He accused them of being fake and doing fake reports. It was obvious that he wanted to censor what they had to say. www.salon.com/2017/01/25/donald-trumps-escalating-war-against-the-media_partner/ |
